This is my post about Stuart Hall's representation theory
What is a representation?
Representation is when media gives meaning to a subject that originally has no fixed meaning, however media does not reflect meaning, it creates meaning.
What is a stereotype and why are they used?
Stereotype is when a group or an individual is reduced or classified into a limited set of preconceived ideas that already exists about those particular group in society. It is created to quickly construct representations in an easily accessible way for the audience and to make it easier for them to interpret it. They are also used due to the lack of diversity in the writing room/production.
What are the social groups represented in the media?
Religion, gender, age, race/ethnicity, social class, LGBTQ+, disability, places, events, social issues, and identity.
Two social groups that are stereotyped in Indonesian Media
Positive
What is the group:
Place
How are they represented (mis-en-scene, sound, etc) and what is the reason for this:
They are represented positively in the media, usually with either establishing shots or long shots to show that it's not just a small part of Indonesia that looks "clean, nice, attractive, etc." but it's a large amount of area that are visually pleasing and appealing. An example would be establishing shots of Bali where they mostly show the rice paddies, beaches, mountains, and nature related places in general with the dominant color of green to connote freshness and tranquility. Not only that, they would include soundtracks (ND) of Traditional Balinese Music
in order to attract foreigners who enjoys and increase the tourism business.
How does the audience receive this message:
Examples from media texts (include images/screenshots, video, etc)
- name and year (from the last 5 years):
Negative
What is the group:
LGBTQ+
How are they represented (mise-en-scene, sound, etc):
They are presented negatively in the media, most of the time in news channels
