Magazine Article (1st and 2nd Draft)

This is my 1st draft for my Magazine Article

Vintage Voyages: Bali Edition

Ring Ring, Retirement calls my fellow seniors! As far as your retirement destinations go, or should we call it our elderly joy estate choices, Bali is definitely up there. I can confidently say that as I’ve experienced Bali myself. These gray hairs tells a story of the times I’ve trodden thousands of miles of both the smooth and the beaten paths, tramped across the globe and worn out a few passports, basically all the idioms I can think of that tells you that I have just the right tips you need as you journey across Bali’s finest hues of golden sands and azure colored waves. But it doesn’t end there, the sweet flavors of Bali’s traditional delights awaits your pink stage along with the savory history that fights for your full attention.

Kuta Beach: Where Bali is truly Alive

Kuta Beach is located in a strategic area where you will have easy access to most of the things you’d need. You’re hungry? All across the main streets are restaurants that don't focus only in Balinese foods, but also cuisines from other countries ranging from South Eastern countries all the way to American and European countries that may feed your home-sick feeling and wrap you up in the warmth and comfort of your home country’s delicacies. However, just to inform you, international foods in Bali are way more expensive ranging across Rp 60,000 - Rp 80,000 or $4-5 USD than local foods that normally range around Rp 25,000 - Rp 50,000 or $2-3 USD at most. Though, it would be quite a waste to come to Bali only to eat your home country’s foods instead of enriching yourselves in what brings about the smiles and satisfaction in almost all the expressions of the tourists that I came across. In the case where you choose to envelope your taste buds with Bali’s rich spices, you can always wash it down with a little Gelato ice cream you can find inside the shopping mall, restaurants, and their own stores that costs about Rp 25,000 to Rp 35,000 or $2-2.30 USD for one scoop.

Sanur Beach: Where the Golden Beach meets the Symphony of the Waves

Cycling across the smooth pavement, eating breakfast, lunch, or dinner in the cafes that lines up as long as the sidewalks go, going on a kayak alone or with your loved ones to appreciate the marine below, drinking coconut as you listen to the chatter of the birds, the dogs, and the people around you, are just a quarter of what you can do in Sanur. Stretching out 8 kilometers across the south-eastern coastline, Sanur beach offers numerous activities made for any age range, including us pensioners. Who says we can’t have fun? Well, our fun might not embody the idea of exerting energy in lively activities but it sure does incorporate relaxing on sunbeds, the sunlight kisses on our body, the never ending melodies of rough waves, and the cool breeze brushing past our gray hairs, battling against the ravaging temperature. Speaking of sunbeds, Sanur's crowd of seaside hotels provide free sunbeds for people who stay in their hotel, charged prices for people outside, and in some cases it can be free but you are required to buy food and beverages from the place first. With the amount of seaside hotels available, you can choose to your heart’s content where if your objective is to achieve peace and silence for the body and mind, you can choose a more secluded area and even though it would be far from the center, you still have access to food, beverages, health and safety aids as they would all be provided by the hotel that provides those sunbeds. To add to that, sunbeds in Sanur also come with sellers that sell massage services at a reasonable price. Picture yourself in the position of those 2 seniors in the image in which serenity and tranquility are plastered all over the mood and atmosphere alone. What if I tell you that that could be you when you decide that Bali is a splendid retirement vacation spot? What’s more, picture that, a sunset view, hours spent with loved ones and talking about life, all in one scene. How can it get better than this? Don’t you think it’s also a perfect way to gain Vitamin D?

Reflection
When I first started making this 1st draft of the magazine article, I was surprised at the mention of 700 words as I didn't expect it to be that much, but when I thought of the amount of topics I had for my content, I realized that it's a normal length. However, the problem that troubled me the most was that I didn't really know how to start as I am writing in the style of an old foreigner that has lived in Bali for a long time and since I'm a young person and I mostly socialize with other young people, I don't know how old people talk, therefore I was worried that my way of addressing my sentences would not match with their preferences. However, I solved this by contacting my mom's friend, which by luck is an old foreigner that has lived in Bali for around 10 years. He read a bit of my article and he said that it was alright to write it the way I did. Although I'm not satisfied with the result as I was confused with how I'm going to put everything together and when looking at it again, It's too long even though It only consists of 2 topics, but then again, it is only my1st draft hence, it is also helpful to me as I can use this as a foundation to what my content will roughly contain and improve it as time goes by such as shortening the paragraphs of each topic to make space for the other topics.

This is my 2nd draft for my Magazine Article as I made a few changes to my Statement of Intent that directly affects this as well.

However it does come with an offer of food and beverages in addition to the prices. Kuta Beach: Where Bali is truly Alive

Kuta Beach is located in a strategic area where you will have easy access to most of the things you’d need. You want to buy affordable handmade souvenirs to bring home to your children and grandchildren? Fret not, street vendors follow you along the sidewalk path of Kuta Beach and to your luck, they sell all kinds of handmade souvenirs such as beaded necklaces and bracelets, thin pieces of cloth known by the name “Sarong” in Indonesian embroidered with Balinese patterns, knitted bags, and much more. Even better, their prices only range from Rp 20,000 - Rp 200,000 or $1.28 - $12.78 at most.

You’re hungry? All across the main streets are restaurants that don't focus only on Balinese foods, but also cuisines from other countries ranging from South Eastern countries all the way to American and European countries that may feed your home-sick feeling and wrap you up in the warmth and comfort of your home country’s delicacies ranging across Rp 60,000 - Rp 100,000 or $3.83 - $6.39 USD. Though, it would be quite a waste to come to Bali only to eat your home country’s foods that you’ve probably eaten ¾ of your life instead of enriching yourselves in what brings about the smiles and satisfaction in almost all the expressions of the tourists that I came across. In the case where you choose to envelope your taste buds with Bali’s rich spices, you can always wash it down with a little Gelato ice cream from Vilo that you can find inside Discovery Shopping mall Kuta that costs about Rp 25,000 to Rp 35,000 or $2-2.30 USD for one cup or purchase a 90 ml tub costing Rp 55,000 or $3.51 USD.

Reflection
Because I changed a few things in my Statement of Intent, I had to change a few of my contents here as well so that it's not confusing. Even though it was quite a hassle to delete and change some things, it now matches with the photos I took, therefore I'll be more able to put everything well together. In the case where I see the need to change things or if my teacher gives me feedback and tells me to fix up some things, this second draft can be helpful as it has the general informations of what I want to tell my readers, therefore there might not be the need to really change anything big.

This is my 3rd draft for my Magazine Article as I made a few changes to my Statement of Intent that directly affects this as well

Self-Reflection
I decided to delete the entire Vintage Voyages: Bali Edition section as this article is only for the double-page spread and I initially wrote that part an introduction of the magazine. Therefore it's quite unrelated and I didn't put it in the final double-page spread as well, thus I'm deleting it from my draft.
